Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Chiropractic FAQs

1. What conditions do chiropractors treat?
Chiropractors commonly treat back pain, neck pain, headaches, joint pain, sciatica, sports injuries, and muscle stiffness or tension. We also support recovery from auto accidents and postural imbalances.

2. Do I need a referral to see a chiropractor?
No, in the state of Michigan you do not need a referral. You can book directly with our office.

3. Do you accept walk-ins?
No, we schedule all visits in advance. If you're hoping to be seen on short notice, please contact the office as soon as possible—we’ll do our best to accommodate you promptly.

4. What should I expect during my first visit?
Your first visit includes a consultation, health history review, physical examination, and in many cases, your first adjustment or therapy session. We’ll explain everything beforehand and answer any questions.

5.Are chiropractic adjustments safe?

Yes. When performed by a licensed chiropractor, spinal adjustments are considered safe and effective for many musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain, neck pain, and joint dysfunction. As with any medical treatment, there are some potential risks. Mild soreness or temporary stiffness may occur after treatment, but serious adverse events are extremely rare.

6. Can neck adjustments cause a stroke or vertebral artery dissection (VAD)?
This is a common concern. While case reports have raised questions about a possible link between cervical spinal manipulation and vertebral artery dissection (VAD), large-scale studies have not found a direct causal relationship. Research suggests the risk is extremely low and may be coincidental.

Recent evidence includes:

  • A 2023 study in the European Spine Journal found no significant association between cervical spinal manipulation and VAD.

  • A 2022 Medicare data analysis reported that patients were not more likely to suffer cervical artery dissection after spinal manipulation compared to a visit to a primary care provider.

As always, we carefully evaluate every patient before treatment and welcome questions about your care.

7. Will I get adjusted on my first visit?
In most cases, yes—if it’s safe and appropriate to proceed. Some patients may need further imaging or evaluation first.

8. How many visits will I need?
This depends on your condition, goals, and how your body responds to care. We'll create a personalized treatment plan and update it as needed.

9. Do adjustments hurt?
Adjustments typically are not painful. Some patients may feel mild soreness afterward, similar to post-exercise muscle soreness.

10. Can children receive chiropractic care?
Yes! Chiropractic care for children is safe and gentle, and can help with issues like posture, mobility, and general development.

11. Do you accept insurance?
No. At North Point Chiropractic, we’ve moved away from the insurance model to provide better, more personalized care without restrictions. HSA and FSA can be used to pay for care.

12. What if I’ve had surgery or have a pre-existing condition?
Chiropractic care can often be safely modified to accommodate surgeries or pre-existing conditions. We’ll take a thorough history to determine the safest approach.

13. How do I schedule, cancel, or reschedule an appointment?
You can call or text *(906) 523-5610, email DrBerryman@NorthpointMI.com , or message us directly through our website or social media to manage appointments.
